Cinnamon Jumbles Recipe

Circa 1960 - the origins of this recipe might be as old as 600 A.D.! And most likely arrive on our shores from England where history says that the King liked them and carried the recipe in his pocket... in 1458. Not quite sure this all true. Still we can surmise that the recipe is old.

1. Mix the shortening, sugar, and egg thoroughly

2. Stir in buttermilk  and vanilla

3. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl

4. Whisk together the dry ingredients

5. Add the dry mixture to the wet and stir to combine

6. Chill the dough overnight

7. Pre-heat oven to 400F

8. Bake 8 to 10 minutes - until set but not brown

Inadequate Directions
The cinnamon and castor sugar listed at the end of the ingredients were not mentioned in the directions. In addition, there was no mention of what to do with the dough after placing it in the refrigerator. My best guess would be to form small balls and roll them into a cinnamon-sugar mixture before baking. However, there were no instructions of any type for how to handle the dough or these remaining ingredients. It would also be helpful to note spacing for cookie placement on baking sheet and whether or not baking sheet should be greased (parchment, Silpat, etc.). Please update this recipe. Thank you.
