Basic Moong Dal Recipe


1 cup moong dal 

2 teaspoons ghee (or butter) 

1 tsp ground turmeric 

1 tsp minced garlic 

1 tsp ground cumin 

1/2 teaspoon pimenton 

1/2 tablespoon ground coriander 

1 cup onion chopped 

1 inch piece fresh ginger grated 

1/2 teaspoon hot chili flakes 

1 cup chopped tomato - canned works well 

sea salt to taste 

fresh ground tellicherry pepper

Moong dal is a recipe that everyone makes and makes differently. The key to success is to experiment and not to worry!


#1: Wash the moong dal in water and set aside

#2: Heat the ghee in a large saucepan over medium heat

#3: Add the cumin seeds and stir and fry about 1 minute. Add turmeric, garlic, cumin, piementon, coriander and stir in.

#4: Add the onion, ginger, and chili flakes. Cook until the onions turn translucent.

#5: Add the moong dal and 2 cups of water to the pan. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to simmer. Partially cover the pan and cook until the beans are tender about 20 minutes. Add more water if needed.

#6: Add the tomato and simmer until the dal are just tender, not fully cooked. Cook additional 15 to 20 minutes until the dal is soft and the liquid is almost gone. Salt and Pepper to taste.

#7: Serve hot over rice.
