Baru is a Brazilian nut that tastes more like peanuts but is actually a seed of the baru fruit. It is unknown outside of Brazil - or even within Brazil. Many people have never tasted it. It is foraged by local communities in the vast Cerrado tropical savanna region of central Brazil who patiently wait for the fruit to fall from the tree before harvesting the fruit, cracking the seeds, and roasting them - to give them that nutty flavor. It's also found in parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru and is an up and coming superfood because combared to nuts, it has higher protein content, higher fiber, is lower in fat, and is loaded with nutrients. The good news is, with increased demand for baru nuts, the trees are no longer being cut down for timber. The resulting wild cultivation and harvest is ecologically sound and sustainable and will help preserve the vast Brazilian rainforests.

The flavor of the Baru nut is a mix dominated by peanut, with hints of cashew and Brazil nut. Although not as "oily" as a peanut, the baru flavor is more complex, unique, and appealing in many ways than peanuts; and the baru nut has an exceptionally satisfying crunch. Some people who are allergic to peanuts find they can eat Baru nuts with no problem.
