Ole World Oils Camelina Gold Oil

250 ml bottle - Ritzville, WA

One of the key features of Camelina oil is its naturally abundant supply of omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, this Camelina oil is made up of about 35% omega-3’s, and has a relatively small amount of omega-6 fatty acids, especially when compared to our more common seeds oils, such as canola oil, and sunflower and safflower oil, giving it a favorable omega 3 to omega 6 ratio of 2:1.

Camelina oil is therefore unique because it is well suited as an omega-3 supplement and it makes excellent salad oil - with it's pleasant, nutty flavor (...unlike Flax seed oil, which is frankly, aweful tasting -- and has very limited culinary uses both because of its flavor, and its unstable lipid structure and lack of tocopherals to protect the double bonds in the omega-3 fatty acids.)

The monounsaturated fat in the Camelina oil provides for a high smoke point, though the stong-ish flavor relegates it to more of a specialty finishing or salad oil, as oppoed to a general purpose cooking oil, such as Rice Bran Oil.  Packed with natural antioxidants (like Vitamin Es), Camelina oil also has a  shelf life of 18-24 months - unlike Flaxseed Oil, which has a shelf life of maybe days, if not hours.

Personally, I use it as my go-to salad oil, but also put it in my smoothy in the morning - yum!

History of Camelina Oil

Although relatively popular in Europe during the begining of the last century, during the Industrial Revolution camelina lost favor as a common everyday oil as it cannot be hydrogenated easily (turned into margarine - which also means manufactured trans-fats!).  It has recently “re-emerged” in both the US and Europe as a popular oil for both general eating and health - as it contains high levels of omega-3’s (polyunsaturated fats), and is one of the highest plant sources of vitamin E (tocopherol).
