All about Reed Avocados - A King Among Fruits

Organic Reed Avocado from California are amazing! About 90% of the avocado crop in the US is grown in California -- and about 90% of those are Hass Avocados -- the favored avocado fruit of the US grocery stores. The Reed is a side crop -- reserved mostly for local Framer's Markets. But, Reeds are so delicious and far superior in texture and taste, they really should take center stage

Why? Because these babies are big! We weighed them, we compared them, we sliced them open, and ate them. The taste was smooth, buttery, surprisingly and distinctively flavorful - completely and totally delicious. The Reeds we got from Peter and Bonnie averaged 1.27 pounds, a whopping half to three-quarters of a pound more than the biggest Hass we could find at the local high-end grocer. And Peter says they are only going to get bigger.

But, more importantly, when you cut one open you notice the pit of the Reed and the pit of the Hass are almost the same size - which means more meat in a Reed! This year (2011) we actually stopped eating long enough to compare a Reed to a Hass; the Reed had at least 3 times the meat* (by weight) than the nicest Hass we could find in the grocery store at the time. (*Of course, your result may very. It depends on the Hass that you find. We also compared it to one of those $1 Hass avocados that are so popular in the fall, and the results were even more dramatic, especially when you consider that about 1/3 of the Hass we got was in-edible...)

Health Benefits of Avocados
